The Mountains

Some of my favorite memories as a little girl are of going to the mountains to get wood or just camp out with my family. I remember many times getting stuck on the mountain for various reasons. Either the truck would have mechanical failure or my sister would scream at the top of her lungs and my dad would slam on the brakes and we would get stuck. Anyway...you get the idea. These times led to some great memories for us as kids. To us it just meant more time to play and get dirty. Well...skip ahead 20 or so years and I am with my darling three children and my handsome husband on a drive through Cedar Canyon. It was beautiful with all the changing leaves and the fresh mountain air. I was thinking of all the great times I had had with my family in the mountains. Well we decided to take the "Scenic" route around Kolob reservoir only to realize after going over some rugged terrain and then over a very steep hill that the road didn't go any further. The problem was that Dave's truck is only a two wheel drive and there was NO WHERE to turn around. We soon realized we were stuck. Soon some nice people found us and tried to pull us out with a four wheeler. We kept sliding closer and closer to a cliff and I soon realized I better get my kids out of the car. (I know this looks like he is just parked on a road but he is actually on a VERY steep hill next to a cliff. This is also only about half way up to get out of our mess)

I am very thankful for laid back children who LOVE to be dirty. Cameron was able to throw rocks in the reservoir and the girls gorged themselves on licorice (I was just keeping them happy).
(Cameron practicing for next T-ball season)

(All the action wiped the girls out)

About two hours in to this mess it began to rain so I made a "fort" under a bush and we were able to stay dry. Again the kids think this is a great adventure. Cameron said a little prayer that Daddy's truck would be able to get unstuck and we had a little talk about faith. Finally a man with a 4 wheel drive truck came and pulled us out. It took a total of three hours and about 15 men to help. These men were rough, beer drinking, smoking, foul mouthed men who could not have been kinder to us. They were laughing and having a great time when they could have easily been irritated at our "city-minded" adventure. I am very grateful to these kind men. We were also able to help Cameron understand that sometimes Heavenly Father answers our prayers through other people. I myself finally gained an understanding of how stressed out my parents must have been all those times we got stuck on the mountain. My only regret about this adventure is that I didn't take more pictures. These pictures don't do it justice.

What a great experience. I love how our Heavenly Father blesses us with these teaching moments. You are such a good mom to take this situation and make it a positive one. We never did our game night, are you still up for one????

That does seem like one of the challenges of parenthood especially as your kids get older is to not freak out (as I would like to put it) when things like that happen. That is a great experience to teach children about faith. Glad you got to enjoy the mountains!

Oh the memories of being in the mountains. I am so glad the 'rough' guys found you and were able to 'rescue you city folks'.

I still refuse to accept the responsibility for our adventures, either through screaming or through confirming that the road really went all the way through. I please innocence to the end.
