The truth about Reno

There has been so much talk about Reno.  Several years ago Dave's work started talking to him about moving to Reno and running operations for DR Horton there.  He had just been called to be the Bishop and we knew the timing wasn't right.  They continued to offer and he continued to decline.  Then about a year ago we decided we should give it some more thought.  After talking praying and thinking long and hard we decided that Dave should at least give it a shot.  So a year ago for Spring Break we took the kids on a fun vacation that ended in Reno and we talked to them about the opportunity for Dave to work there.  We were very honest about it and explained that if things went well it would mean a move for our family.  Of course they didn't love the idea but we wanted to be honest with them.  In June Dave started working one day a week in Reno and then slowly increased until October he was in Reno full time.  He had a condo there and would stay the week and fly home for the weekends.  Everything was fine but we realized that our family is much better together than apart.  We decided that the best thing for our family would be to move in June after school got out.  The one big problem was that it just didn't feel right to move but it also didn't feel right to live in different cities.  My prayers turned into something like...."I have no idea what to do so unless something drastic happens we will be moving our family in June.  If that is not right for us please stop the process somehow."  I didnt' really know how else to pray anymore.  The kids were not thrilled with moving but they were trying to be positive and supportive.  We knew that Reno had a lot to offer our family.  It is small and safer.  The temple is really close to where we would be building a home.  We had picked out our lot and had a few floor plans narrowed down.  We decided to take a trip up there to enjoy some of the winter activities to show our kids how much fun we could have.  We got snow gear because we knew we would put it to good use.  We planned to go up the day after Christmas.  We decided when we came home from that trip we would start telling our friends that we were moving and get the house ready to sell.  That would give us a few months to prepare.  Well....exactly one week before Christmas Dave's boss got fired.  It was a complete surprise and totally out of the blue for us.  After meeting with the regional president it was decided to have Dave come back to Vegas.   Cameron had really been struggling and this was such a huge relief to him.  We told him right away but we wrapped up a paper that said "We are not moving" and gave it to the girls for Christmas.   What a relief to have this off of our backs.  We decided we still wanted to take the trip to Reno because it was going to be so much fun.
We started with a snowmobiling trip out by Lake Tahoe.  It was beautiful and we had such a great time.  It was cold and the girls didn't have great pants so they froze but we still had a blast.
Cameron was the warmest because he had on all my Olympic gear.
It was a really fun thing that they had never done before.  I think the trip would have helped them feel better about moving but it was much more enjoyable knowing we were going to be able to stay put.
This is Donner Lake.  It was magical.  Such a peaceful and beautiful place.
It was about 10 degrees outside but we still stopped for ice-cream.
We went Ice skating down town.  Reno has a cute little down town area that we have explored a little bit.
Little beauties

One afternoon we drove over to Virginia City.  We loved this place and would love to visit again.  There is something about small towns that just makes me happy.  I think I have passed that love on to my children.  We love exploring little quaint towns wherever we go.
This church reminded so much of New England.  Luckily there was a mass going on.  I took the kids in to see the mass but Dave wouldn't let us stay.  I love to visit old churches.
 silly girls
We found a candy store and spend our life savings in there.

We are so thankful for all that we learned about prayer and listening to the spirit over the last year.  I am so thankful that God answered our prayers and that we find ourselves in a place where we feel peace and know that we are where we are supposed to be.  That doesn't mean that we won't be visited the Lake Tahoe area in winter again.  We loved it up there.
