The Las Vegas Bowl

So first of all there have been very few miserable football games that I have attended. It is never fun when BYU loses but there have been very few that I would call unbearable. Saturday night was one of those games. All I can say is BYU was terrible. I feel like they have gotten progressively worse throughout the year which is so frustrating. That is all I will say about the actual playing on the field. The worst part of it was in the stands. This was one of the worst. (Nothing will ever top the game we went to at UNR when I was pregnant with Cameron. I threw up in a cup the WHOLE TIME. Luckily Dave's work had a box so I could occasionally go throw up in a bathroom and there is a hill with trees so I could go lay down. The fans were total rednecks. I thought I had gone back in time.) Anyway...we were given GREAT seats by the nicest man in our ward. They were on the 35 yard line about 8 rows up. BUT... they were right in the middle of the Arizona fans. I knew I was in trouble when the lady behind me very politely but obviously irritated told me I should have checked the map to make sure I sat on the right side. (Like I had a choice) Then there was her friend who would yell the dumbest things "C'mon cats show em your teeth" I was ready to show her my teeth. Then she would yell U OF A as loud as she could right in my ear. It wasn't like I was just sitting in front of her. She would actually lean forward and YELL IN MY EAR. By the end of the first quarter I had a migraine and had to leave for a few minutes. After a few utters of "shut up" I think she got the message because she settled down a little bit. Then in the fourth quarter when the guy two rows ahead of us threw up (a few too many drinks) I knew all was lost. Then after losing and making the long walk to our car I dropped one of my gloves that I got while working at the Olympics. I couldn't handle any more bad omens so I got out of the car and scoured the muddy parking lot until I found the glove. It was one small victory.
Enough venting I do have to say that for as hokie as the Las Vegas bowl can be and for how sick of it I am. (Could we please go somewhere else?) I don't know if anyone does the pre-game patriotic program better than Vegas. I am so proud of Nellis Air Force Base. It is always moving to see the Terrible Herbst flag that is as big as the entire field rolled out by our service men and women. I get teary every time. Then this year the guy from Jersey Boys who sang "God Bless America" was fabulous. OK so the best part was when the introduced the singer of the National Anthem Mr. David Hasselhoff himself. (He was right in front of us) I laughed out loud. Have any of you seen him on America's Got Talent. He is totally obnoxious. Dave was actually so excited he was speechless or maybe he was trying to hold in his laughter. I expected him to show boat the Anthem and ruin it. But...props to Night Rider. He actually did it very well. Anyway...the jets from the Air Force Base fly by and for some reason I just feel so proud to be an American and live in this great country. It was a great start to a game that went completely down hill from there.

Hey Tiff,
I'm so glad you put your blog address on your Christmas card. Now we can check in to see how our Vegas friends are doing. Cameron has gotten so big and how fun the girls must be!

Tiffani -
So sorry, I am sure it must have been cold too - were your kids there?! I totally know what you mean about obnoxious fans, I have sat by my share over the years, I have so many stories about that. Years ago I went to a BYU vs. Utah game at Utah and was cheering for the Y - BIG mistake. Those people made it so miserable for me, they were spitting on me and threw up right behind me (I swear he was aiming for me!). Anyway, we ended up leaving before the game was even over because it was that bad.

I think Tim mentioned the lady who kept yelling "show them your teeth", so annoying. It didn't sound like a very fun game for sure.

And I thought it was painful to watch on t.v.! I agree about being disappointed. It seems like during the season we would have realized that it's good to blitz once in a while, especially when our d.b.'s are slower than their running backs. I guess Arizona was making up for the previous 10 years.

I've only won one bowl game so far.
