On Wednesday morning things were as usual at our house. I had fed the kids breakfast. Frantically got Cameron out the door to school and then was trying to regroup from morning chaos when I heard Clara say "Yummy Orangeses". My kids LOVE mandarin oranges so in the mornings I almost always open a can. Being the Oh so smart Mom that I am I only cut the lid a little so that I can drain the juice. Well, Clara decided to get her own orange and got her finger stuck in the can. Before I could get to her to help her get it out she yanked her finger out of the can. I will spare you the horrible details but it was one of those moments when you are screaming your head off inside but the calm Mom somehow surfaces on the outside. I called my neighbor to come and sit with Lauryn until Dave could get home and I put Clara in my lap and drove her to the ER.
She was so good and I am sure the doctors were glad they were dealing with her and not me.
She had eaten breakfast so we had to wait for about 2 1/2 hours before they could sedate her. She just sat and watched a princess movie (three times total while we were there). The doctor and nurses couldn't believe how good she was so they had all the students come in and observe her because she was the "perfect" patient. They kept going on and on about how beautiful she it. I must say I couldn't agree more. She is priceless.
This is nurse Steve getting all her tubes and wires hooked up for the procedure.
They had to sedate her because she little. They could do a finger block but the Dr. said it was Super painful. We opted for the less painful method. Plus going under anesthesia causes amnesia so she doesn't remember anything. For a three year old, I think that is a good idea.
She had a little trouble coming out of anesthesia. We had to stay at the hospital for quite a while. I think it had a little something to do with the fact that it was also her nap time.
This is what her finger looks like right now. She unwrapped it and totally grossed herself out. I don't think she will be unwrapping it again.
Today she smashed one of her good fingers in a drawer. She started screaming and when she finally settled down she said "I don't want to go back to the hospital." I don't blame her!

Poor little thing. What a trooper. Her finger looks gross. Her hair is so long! We're proud of how brave she was. P.S. Break out the other can opener.
Sweet girl. So, is it stitched? Good job mom, staying calm even when you're not calm on the inside!!!
